Kudumbashree
Kudumbashree – State Poverty Eradication Mission is an innovative system established in 1998 by the Government of Kerala through the Local Self Government Department with the objectives of poverty eradication and women empowerment. Its activities are implemented through a community-based organisational system formed under the leadership of Local Self Government Institutions (Panchayats/Municipalities).
▣ Organisational Structure
Neighbourhood Group (NHG)
- One woman member who has completed 18 years of age.
- Consists of 10–20 members.
Area Development Society (ADS)
- Federation of Neighbourhood Groups at the ward level.
- Coordinates the activities of Neighbourhood Groups.
Community Development Society (CDS)
- Functions at the Panchayat / Municipality level.
- Led by women elected through a democratic process.
- Local Self Government representatives provide leadership as patrons / chairpersons of the evaluation committee.
◎ Main Objectives
Poverty Eradication
Gives primary importance to poverty eradication.
Economic Empowerment
Promotes economic self-reliance through income generation, entrepreneurship and microfinance.
Social Development
Undertakes social development activities in areas such as health, education and Destitute-Free Kerala.
Women Empowerment
Promotes leadership, participation in decision-making and gender equality.
✦ Major Activities & Programmes
1. Economic Development / Livelihood
- Micro Enterprises: Kudumbashree Café, Janakeeya Hotels, Nutrimix, Haritha Karma Sena, Construction Groups, Apparel Groups and other enterprises.
- Bank Linkage & Savings and Credit: Bank linkage loans and self-help savings and credit activities for Neighbourhood Groups.
- Marketing: Provides marketing opportunities by listing products on platforms such as ONDC.
- Agriculture / Animal Husbandry / Value Addition: Collective farming, Farmer JLGs, processing, branding, fairs and related activities.
2. Social Development
- Destitute-Free Kerala: Identification, rehabilitation and comprehensive support for poor and destitute families.
- BUDS & Balasabha: Activities aimed at children's education, protection and development.
- Disaster Relief / Rehabilitation: Livelihood assistance and rehabilitation support for disaster-affected families.
3. Women Empowerment
- Gender Self-Learning: Strengthens women empowerment activities.
- Snehitha Gender Help Desk: Provides necessary support and services for women.
- Skill Development & Employment: Skill training and employment opportunities for rural youth through DDU-GKY 2.0.
- Leadership Training: Capacity development in democratic governance, microfinance and livelihood management at CDS / ADS / NHG levels.
4. Other Major Interventions
- PMAY-LIFE (Kerala): Kudumbashree functions as the nodal agency.
- SVEP / SRLM-NRLM: Supports rural entrepreneurship and livelihood activities.
- Marketing Interventions: Marketing interventions such as 'Onakkani' are undertaken during the Onam season for price regulation and distribution.
